Ring in the new year with a full day of high school hoops at the second annual Sandburg Shootout on Jan. 4 at Carl Sandburg College’s John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

This year’s shootout features seven consecutive boys basketball matchups — one more than last season’s inaugural event — between schools throughout central Illinois.

  • 11 a.m. — Farmington vs. United Township
  • 12:30 p.m. — Brimfield vs. Illini West
  • 2 p.m. — West Central vs. Lewistown
  • 3:30 p.m. — Sherrard vs. Knoxville
  • 5 p.m. — Peoria Quest vs. Monmouth-Roseville
  • 6:30 p.m. — Roanoke-Benson vs. Wethersfield
  • 8 p.m. — Midwest Central vs. United

Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students. All tickets can be purchased at the door, and admission is good for all seven games.

The field includes two teams that are ranked in the first Associated Press polls of the season (Class 1A No. 3 Peoria Quest and 1A No. 9 Wethersfield) as well as another that is receiving votes (Brimfield in 1A).

Featured games include Peoria Quest taking on Monmouth-Roseville and Roanoke-Benson facing Wethersfield in a rematch of a regional championship game last season, which the Flying Geese won 63-56.

Last year’s inaugural Sandburg Shootout saw five of the six games decided in the final 10 seconds, three decided on the final possession and one won at the buzzer as Wethersfield’s Coltin Quagliano hit a runner in the lane to defeat Tremont.

“We had great games, an awesome turnout and a lot of positive feedback last year, so we’re looking forward to it being even bigger this time around,” said Sandburg men’s basketball coach Ryan Twaddle, who organized the event. “We have some new teams this year and a few others that wanted to come back again. It’s a good mix of schools that don’t usually face each other. If you’re here for every game, it costs less than a dollar for each, so you can’t get much better bang for your buck as a basketball fan.”
